What If We Have...

1-10 Employees

IT support for small businesses where the IT department is whoever’s free.

You’re the founder, the finance department and – most days – the person who restarts the router. It works, right up until the morning email stops syncing and half a day disappears. This page is about what a business of one to ten people genuinely needs from IT, what it costs, and what you can safely ignore for now.

The Problem

In a business your size, there is no IT department. There’s you, or whoever on the team is best with computers, squeezing tech problems in between the actual job. A laptop that won’t wake up, an email that never arrived, a password nobody can remember, a customer asking whether you’re Cyber Essentials certified before they’ll sign.

None of it is difficult work. It’s just work that isn’t yours, and it always lands on the busiest day.

Most small businesses handle this one of two ways. They muddle through themselves and lose hours they’ll never invoice for. Or they call someone out when something breaks, pay by the hour, and never get round to the things that would stop it breaking again. Both feel cheaper than proper support. Neither actually is.

Below is what we’d tell you if you rang us – including the parts that don’t make us any money.

You Need Your IT to Be Someone Else's Job

At 1-10 people, the biggest IT cost isn’t software or support. It’s the hours the owner spends fixing things instead of running the business.

Why this is a concern:

When your accounts package won’t open or Outlook stops syncing, there’s nobody down the corridor to ask. So it becomes your problem, usually at 8am or on a Friday afternoon. An hour here, an afternoon there, and the real bill is the work that didn’t get done – the quote that went out late, the customer who waited.

There’s a second cost that’s easier to miss. Small businesses are a genuine target precisely because they’re assumed to have no defences, and a single compromised email account can mean redirected invoices, a damaged reputation, and an insurance claim declined because the basics weren’t in place.

Why it's important:

Getting this right at your size isn’t complicated or expensive. It’s a handful of things done properly, once: email that stays up, data that’s genuinely backed up, devices that are protected and kept current, and a number to ring when something goes wrong. Do that, and IT stops being something you think about.

Solutions

These are some of the things we do to help your business

Email and Microsoft 365, Set Up Properly

For most businesses your size, Microsoft 365 is the IT system. We make sure it’s configured correctly, licensed sensibly rather than over-sold, secured with multi-factor authentication, and that nobody is quietly sharing one login between three people.

Support You Can Actually Ring

A named team who know your setup, on a fixed monthly cost with no hourly-rate anxiety. Unlimited support with no ticket caps and no per-incident charges, so nobody on your team has to decide whether a problem is “worth” logging.

Backup, Security and Cyber Essentials

Real backup of your Microsoft 365 data – because Microsoft doesn’t do that for you – plus proper device protection and, when your customers start asking for it, a straightforward route to Cyber Essentials certification.

Not sure which one you need?

Two minutes, a handful of questions, and a straight answer – including if that answer is “you don’t need much”. No sales call at the end unless you ask for one.

You wouldn't spend your Saturday under the sink learning to fix your own plumbing. IT is the same. Small businesses don't need a big IT department - they need one they can ring, who picks up, and who's already sorted the problem before you noticed it.

Our recommendation for a business your size

We could list all four packages and let you work it out. Here’s what we’d actually say if you rang us.

For most businesses of 10-50 people, it's the Essential IT Support Service

Not because it’s the cheapest, but because it’s the honest starting point. Unlimited support with no ticket caps, plus proper device protection, monitoring and patching, the things that stop small problems becoming afternoons. If your Microsoft 365 is already set up and working, this is all most small teams need.

If email security and backup of your Microsoft 365 data matter to you, and for most businesses they should because that’s where the risk sits, Essential adds both, along with your Microsoft 365 Business Premium licence.

And if a customer or an insurer has already asked whether you’re Cyber Essentials certified, Professional includes the certification and the strongest security we offer.

If you’re two people who just need someone occasionally, On-Demand with no contract at all. We’d rather tell you that than sell you something you don’t need.

The Basics

What a business of your size actually needs - and what it doesn't.

Support that answers the phone.

At your size you don’t need an account manager and a quarterly service review. You need someone who knows your name and can fix it today.

Microsoft 365 done right.

Correct licences, multi-factor authentication switched on, and shared mailboxes instead of shared passwords. Most of the problems we’re called about in small businesses start here.

Backup that includes your email and files.

OneDrive syncing is not a backup. If a file is deleted or an account is compromised, you need to be able to get it back.

Protection on every device.

Laptops leave the building, and increasingly that’s where the risk sits. Antivirus on its own isn’t enough any more.

What you don't need yet:

a server, an internal IT hire, or an enterprise security stack. We’ll tell you when that changes, and not before.

Switching is easier than you're expecting

The most common reason small businesses stay with IT support that isn’t working is the thought of moving. It’s usually a much smaller job than people imagine, and it’s our job, not yours.

01

A proper conversation first.

We look at what you’ve actually got – how many devices, what’s on them, what licences you’re paying for. We often find people paying for things twice. No obligation at this stage, and if we think you’re fine as you are, we’ll say so.

02

We handle the handover.

Including the awkward part. Getting admin access and passwords back from a previous provider, a freelancer, or the person who set it all up and left, is a conversation we have regularly and it’s rarely as difficult as people fear. You don’t have to make that call.

03

We set things up in the background.

Device management, security, monitoring and backup are put in place while you carry on working. Most businesses of your size are fully moved across within a week or two, with no day of downtime.

04

Then you've got a team, and a number to ring.

Unlimited support, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with out-of-hours cover available by arrangement.

Questions small businesses ask us

We have compiled a list of questions that are often asked about IT Support and how it can help your business. If you can’t find the answer to a question you have, please contact us today!

No. A good number of our customers are under ten people. Pricing is per user, so a team of four pays for four – you’re not subsidising anybody else’s IT department.

You can take any package on a rolling monthly term. Longer terms are available and carry a discount – 5% at 12 months, 10% at 24 and 20% at 36 on IT support – but that’s your choice, not a condition. There’s also On-Demand support with no contract at all.

Yes, and one who knows your setup. Support is unlimited with no ticket caps and no per-incident charges, so nobody on your team needs to weigh up whether a problem is worth logging.

This is the one that surprises almost everyone: no. Microsoft protects the service, not your content. If a file is deleted, a mailbox is compromised, or someone leaves and takes a folder with them, that’s on you. Our Essential and Professional packages include proper backup of your Microsoft 365 data.

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed certification proving you’ve got the basics right, and it’s increasingly a condition of winning work or renewing cyber insurance. Certification is included in our Professional package, and as an NCSC Assured Service Provider and IASME-certified Cyber Advisor we can take you through it end to end.

Nothing breaks. Pricing is per user, so it scales with you, and the packages step up as your needs do. We’d rather set you up properly at four people than rebuild it at twenty.

We’re based in Bristol and work across Bath, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Somerset and Swindon, with remote support anywhere in the UK.

Yes. We supply hardware and licences too, which usually works out cheaper than buying ad hoc – and it means everything arrives already set up and secured.

Ready when you are

You’d be in good company. We look after small businesses across Bristol, Bath, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Somerset and Swindon, and we’re an NCSC Assured Service Provider, Cyber Essentials Plus certified, and ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 accredited. The same standards our largest customers audit us against, applied just as carefully to a business of two people.

If you’re not ready to talk to anyone yet, the buyer’s guide covers what to look for and what to avoid. If you are, we’ll give you a straight answer, including if that answer is that you don’t need us.

Reassuring Availability

There is nothing more annoying than an IT glitch that stops you working efficiently. However, knowing you have access to immediate attention to the glitch and a solution to it, is very reassuring and that is provided by We Do Your IT. We have so appreciated the availability and response given by the team at We Do Your IT, enabling us to remain a productive firm.
