Before you can safely use AI tools like Copilot, you need to know where your sensitive data lives and who can access it. Microsoft Purview gives you the data classification, loss-prevention policies, and governance controls to secure your tenant — and make AI safe to roll out.
Microsoft Purview is Microsoft's data governance and compliance platform. It provides data classification and sensitivity labelling, Data Loss Prevention (DLP), insider risk management, retention, and eDiscovery — giving you visibility and control over your data in Microsoft 365.
Before enabling Microsoft Copilot. Also essential for any business handling regulated or sensitive data, or preparing for ISO 27001 or Cyber Essentials Plus. Included in the Core AI Security Pack.

Know where your sensitive data is and who can access it, prevent accidental or malicious data sharing, meet regulatory data protection requirements, and create the governance foundation that makes AI tools safe.

Copilot reads across everything in your M365 tenant. If your data is unclassified and permissions are over-broad, Copilot will surface confidential information — HR files, salaries, board minutes — to any user who asks. Purview fixes the underlying data governance problem first.
It means documents, emails, and files get tagged — Confidential, Internal, Public, and so on. Labels drive DLP rules, control who can share what, and make data visible to management reporting.
Both. Purview can auto-classify content based on what it finds — personal data, financial data — and users can manually apply labels. AvePoint Elements sits alongside it to handle the bulk of the heavy lifting automatically.
Data Loss Prevention — a set of policies that detect and prevent sensitive data from being shared in ways you haven’t authorised. For example, stopping a document labelled Confidential from being emailed to a personal Gmail account.
Yes. Purview helps you identify where personal data sits, control how it moves, and enforce retention and deletion policies — all of which are relevant to GDPR compliance.
eDiscovery is the ability to search, collect, and export specific emails, files, and data for legal proceedings or internal investigations. Purview’s eDiscovery tools are used by legal and compliance teams.
Minimally. Sensitivity labels appear in Office apps and staff can apply them as part of normal workflows. DLP policies run silently unless a policy is triggered.
Some Purview features are included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, but the full suite used in our AI Security Pack requires additional licences. We include these in the pack pricing.
A basic classification and DLP deployment typically takes a few weeks. AvePoint alongside it speeds up the data discovery and auto-tagging phase significantly.
Yes. Information classification, DLP, and audit logging from Purview support multiple ISO 27001 controls. It’s a strong foundation for any formal certification programme.
